The SHRM Foundation was founded in 1966 as a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit affiliate of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). It is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors from the HR profession, including academics, practitioners and representatives from SHRM. The Foundation funds research, publications and education to advance the HR profession and enhance the effectiveness of HR professionals.

The Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) is the leading independent, internationally recognized certifying body for the HR profession. HRCI certifications require professionals to demonstrate their expertise in the core principles of HR practice and the application of those principles. HRCI's three core certifications meet the needs of nearly every HR professional.

What’s New in Workers’ Comp-
What the Emphasis On

Return to Work Means to You

Many changes have been made to the workers’ compensation system that provide more opportunity than ever before for employers to control their workers’ compensation costs.  The primary goal of the workers’ compensation system is to get the injured employee healed and back to productive work. Understanding the changes and how employers can take an active role in managing their workers’ compensation claims is the key to lower workers’ compensation costs. Employers, health care providers, insurance carriers and injured employees all have an active role to play in eliminating unnecessary lost time, reducing medical costs and eliminating unnecessary medical care.

Myspace, Facebook and Internet Background Checks –
An Emerging Area of Liability for Employers

The internet has made it possible for an employer to find out the most intimate details about an applicant or employee.  An employee may have their own homepage on a social site such as myspace or facebook with revealing pictures, or controversial information about their private life.  For example, the mayor of a small Oregon town recently made headlines when the townspeople discovered racy pictures on her myspace page.  This scenario has played out in workplaces across the country where an employer is made aware of pictures or material posted on the internet that causes controversy in the workplace.  Even worse, a coworker circulates the information or photos and the employer receives a harassment complaint from the affected employee.

Supervisory Investigator (Intake) Houston District Office

Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

Gladys City Spindletop

I got a letter for the EEOC and it's not an invitation to a seminar ... now what do I do?

When you do get a letter it is important to keep breathing ... we lose more HR professionals that way. Remember just because you receive a letter from us only means we have one side of the story and now we want you to give us the other side of the story. This session will take you through the process and show the best way to respond to a charge. Bring your questions, concerns and criticism and get answers.

Mr. Wideman has been with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission since 1985. He was an Investigator in various positions for 15 years. He was appointed as a Supervisory Investigator for the Houston District Office in January 2000. He reviews more than 3,500 cases on a yearly basis to ensure that the charges are accurate. He monitors charges for the applicable law and for the correct bases and issues for investigation. He provides technical information and training to employees as well as employers regarding the four laws enforced by the Commission: the Equal Pay Act of 1963, as amended; Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended; the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967; and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, as amended. He provides training to state and local governments, as well as employers. Also, he is the State and Local Coordinator between the Houston District Office and the Texas Workforce Commission-Civil Rights Division, Austin, Texas.
